Youth Leadership Forum for Community Transformation (YLFCT) in Tulsa
Throughout the centennial year of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, we recognized the importance of creating a space where young people can come together and have meaningful conversations about the relevance and legacy of Black Wall Street and ethnic diversity in the United States and the power within Tulsa-area youth to advocate for change for themselves and their communities.
YLFCT in Tulsa is a partnership between OCCJ and Greenwood Rising that seeks to create space for young people to talk openly and honestly about their communities and work collaboratively to create change in those communities. The primary social impact of creating this space is increased self and social awareness of the participants, creating global citizens. The innovation of this program exists in its approach to student social-emotional learning through the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
We will use techniques that have proven success from Anytown Leadership Institute in creating a youth-led discussion space where students are able to safely and respectfully have conversations about their experiences with race and ethnicity. The Youth Leadership Forum for Community Transformation in Tulsa will take place over three days with an optional follow-up action project that students may complete after the forum. Those who successfully complete their project will receive a $200 stipend!
It is our goal that students will gain an increased knowledge of the Tulsa's most tragic racial event, their own identities and the ways in which their identities influence their interactions with others.
YLFCT Tulsa for Fall 2023 will be held offered for Tulsa-metro youth ages 14-18 at NO COST during the following days and times*:
- Saturday, October 28: 9am - 5pm
- Sunday, October 29: 2pm - 6pm
- Saturday, November 4: 9am - 5pm
*The content of each session builds upon the content from prior sessions. Because of this, all three days are required for full participation.*
We plan to be hosted by OSU-Tulsa.
